Soothe Your Little One By Telling The Difference Between His or Her Crying Styles

March 25th, 2010

“Babies are just so perfectly innocent!” you can hear your mother-in-law saying. “Life is all sunshine and rainbows once you have this sweet creature in your life.” The truth of the matter is, you have been trying not to pull your hair out every night. Grandparents and friends love to coo over a new infant, but mom and dad find it quite a hefty challenge at times. The constant crying, fussing, and neediness all point to one simple fact. Babies don’t wait to be fed, changed, or put to sleep. You’re desperate to try anything, including wrapping your baby in a swaddle blanket. What is a parent to do?

As difficult as it may be, you must try to increase your patience as much as possible. It is hard being a new parent, but it is equally hard being a baby new to the world, and it will not last forever. Do your best to get to know your baby’s personality, so that you can tell what he or she needs. Take careful note of the way your baby cries; different sounds for hunger, sleepiness, wetness, and other needs will alert you as to how to calm your baby. This can be a daunting task, especially for first-time parents. Make careful note of your baby’s style of cry, along with what remedy worked to quiet him or her.

When it comes to interpreting their baby’s communication attempts, mothers tend to be the experts. All sexism aside, mothers do seem to have a special intuition with their babies. Fortunately, this is where teamwork comes in! Once you can interpret your baby’s cries, Mothers, you should share this valuable knowledge with your husbands. Tell your husband what you have learned to calm your baby, so that he will have an idea of what to try when it is his turn to hold him or her. And make sure to teach your husband how to wrap your little one in baby blankets. Then maybe the next time your mother-in-law exclaims, “What a little darling!” you can exchange a knowing glance with your husband as you happily agree.
