Mister Systems Can Help You Stay Cool in the Hot Months of Summer

April 18th, 2010

Summer time is coming and it’s time to look into ways to remain cool if you live where it gets sizzling hot. In locations such as Phoenix, Arizona, where it gets seriously hot, people have mastered how to deal with the high temps, and many of the smart locals have got “stayin’ cool” down to a science.

One of the easiest ways to keep cool is to “just add water!” In the desert, there are lots of swimming pools! If you don’t have a pool, then head for the lakes - Phoenix is known for having more watercraft per capita than just about almost any other place in the nation! Or go tubing the river.

They say it’s a “dry heat,” but residents of Arizona discovered a long time ago how to cool things off with water. Back in the days before air conditioning, they used “swamp coolers” to cool off their houses. A swamp cooler blows moist, cool air through a building, which cools things off as the moisture evaporates. It’s called evaporative cooling, and it’s much less expensive to operate than A/C. This works incredibly nicely in the dry months, but not really so well during the rainy monsoon time of year in late summer. Smart people make use of the evaporative cooler to save money until the monsoon, then they turn on the A/C.

Outdoors, evaporative cooling works well, even in the monsoon season. That’s the reason so many folks in Phoenix put up misting systems. These systems squirt mist into the surroundings and can cool off a deck or enclosed area rather well, especially if the air is moving. Outdoor fan misters may chill the air down around 30 degrees (fahrenheit). You are likely to see mister systems at just about all dining establishments with open-air patios, and every other service that requires folks to be outdoors in the heat. Many home owners who have a backyard patio set up a mister system to enjoy their backyard more in the summer season.

Although they don’t demand much care, you should carry out some periodic upkeep to be sure your misting system will work effectively whenever you need it. In the Fall, it simply means draining the water from the system as well as disconnecting the system for the winter.

In Springtime, just before the Summer temperature arrives, you will need to reconnect the lines, examine the water pump (or water supply) to see that it’s doing the job, and examine your mister lines for leaks. If your mist system makes use of stainless steel misting line, this won’t be much of a problem. Just check the joints and fittings for leaks. If you’re working with plastic lines, you’ll want to check the whole system for splits and ruptures.

The next thing to carry out is to confirm the misting system nozzles aren’t blocked. If you live in an area that has hard water, the nozzle may possibly be blocked by mineral deposits. It might be feasible to just clean the deposits from the top of the misting nozzle, but if the deposits are on the inside the nozzle orifice, you will have to find a pin or anything small enough to stick through it to clean out the clog. Be careful not to expand the pinhole! What a lot of expert misting system companies do is simply change out all the mist nozzles since it’s simpler and takes a lot less time than to try and clean out every mist nozzle, and the cost of mister nozzles is fairly minimal when you buy them in bulk.
